6th/7th Grade Gifted
This class is appropriate for students taking either Pre-Algebra or Algebra. Students should be on or above grade level. They should have mastered all of their math facts, long division, and multiplication of multi-digit numbers. They should be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions and decimals and have a basic understanding of exponents. Students do not need to have formal qualification (i.e. test scores or IQ tests), but parents should be confident that gifted education is appropriate for their child.
This class will utilize the curriculum provided by MathCounts, including Practice Plans and MathCounts Minis. MathCounts is a four-level, in-person middle school math competition. The focus of this class will NOT be on the competition itself but on engaging with the high-quality math curriculum provided by the program. Students are not required to participate in the competition. We will also utilize curriculum and materials from Math Olympiad, Math for Love (not to be confused with Math = Love, another awesome resource we will use), Beast Academy, and Art of Problem Solving. Students will practice verbalizing their math thinking, and will also play games and solve puzzles collaboratively. Parents should be comfortable overseeing 60-90 minutes of math homework per week.
6th/7th Grade Traditional
This class is appropriate for traditional 6th and 7th grade students who are at or approaching grade level in math. The National Math Club is designed to be flexible so many types of groups can participate. The National Math Club provides game instructions, math explorations, problem sets, and monthly challenges that can be enjoyed by students of all skill levels. This class will also utilize curriculum from Math for Love and Beast Academy. They will play math games, engage in math talks, and solve puzzles. Our goal is to teach your children that math can be engaging and satisfying. We hope to give them an environment in which they can collaborate with their peers to have fun while developing critical thinking skills. This class will not have homework.
2nd/3rd Grade Gifted and 4th/5th Grade Gifted
This class is appropriate for students who are on or above grade level, and preferably using a fairly rigorous mathematics curriculum, such as Beast Academy or Singapore Dimensions. Students do not need to have formal qualification (i.e. test scores or IQ tests), but parents should be confident that gifted education is appropriate for their child.
This class will prepare for and participate in the Math Kangaroo test, an annual 75-minute, pencil-and-paper international math competition. Again, the focus of this class will NOT be on the competition itself but on engaging with the high-quality math curriculum provided by the program. Students are not required to participate in the competition. We will also utilize curriculum and materials from Math for Love (not to be confused with Math = Love, another awesome resource we will use), Beast Academy, and Art of Problem Solving. Students will practice verbalizing their math thinking, and will also play games and solve puzzles collaboratively. Parents should be comfortable overseeing 60 minutes of math homework per week.
